The state of Wyoming varies widely from urban areas to plains and small towns. Accounting is a vital portion of Wyoming’s economy because each small business, each ranch, each energy company, needs an accountant. The choice of job locations and careers varies as widely as the landscape.

State colleges in Wyoming are designed as largely two-year programs intended to feed students to the four-year University of Wyoming at Laramie. This is true for not only accounting students, but also most degrees offered. The colleges in Wyoming offer an accounting program. Because of the way Wyoming has structured its state colleges, most of the schools offer basic accounting and an Associate of Science degree in accounting. This degree is equivalent to the first two years of an accounting program at most universities and is generally accepted if students wish to transfer to a four-year university or college. The Wyoming legislature supports one University, the University of Wyoming, which offers a Bachelor’s of Science degree in accounting and a further Master’s of Science in Accounting. CPA preparation is part of the curriculum of most of the schools.
