Accountancy represents one of the most financially secure and rewarding career options among the business management discipline. The certified public accountant (CPA) credential ensures a moderately high barrier to entry making job competition a bit more reasonable compared to other business sectors requiring no license or certification. In New Hampshire, the best way to prepare for the CPA exam is through comprehensive accounting degree coursework at one of the state’s 15 accredited universities. Some of the expected curriculum topics for students attending accounting degree programs in New Hampshire are:

  • financial accounting
  • accounting information systems
  • controllership
  • business valuation
  • principles of auditing
  • managerial accounting
  • international managerial accounting
  • cost accounting
  • forensic accounting
  • tax accounting

New Hampshire has many outstanding universities that offer business programs designed to help students prepare for the Uniform CPA exam. However, the top two schools that offer programs specifically designated as accounting degree programs are Southern New Hampshire University and University of New Hampshire. These schools are considered outstanding choices for those desiring an accredited accounting degree program because of their program flexibility, nationally recognized ranking, and comprehensive coursework.

Salary and Job Outlook for Accountants in New Hampshire

New Hampshire accountants earned an average salary of $69,280 as of May 2020. The top earners in this profession (90th percentile), which largely represents accountants with graduate-level degrees, senior-level titles, and the CPA designation, earned about $108,020 during this time.

Not surprisingly, the major Nashua metro area posted some of the strongest salaries for accountants in the state. As of May 2020, accountants here earned an average salary of $82,720 and a top salary (90th percentile) of $140,300.

Note that these figures represent base salaries only and do not include salary incentives like bonuses and stock options that can dramatically increase an accountant’s take home pay, particularly among accountants in senior- and executive-level positions.

Between 2018 and 2028, the number of accounting jobs in the state will increase by 8% – that’s twice as fast as the national growth rate in this profession during this time. During the ten-year period leading to 2028, the state expects to see about 620 annual job openings for accounting professionals due to a combination of new job growth, normal turnover, and retirements.

Upon completion of an accredited accounting degree program and CPA licensure, New Hampshire graduates find employment with some of the nation’s biggest CPA firms including Deloitte, which has offices in Concord.
